Gun Control Rhetoric Ignores the Root of the Problem
The tragic events at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, where a gunman took a life and wounded several others before fleeing the scene, were met with an all-too-familiar refrain from anti-gun activists and left-leaning politicians. Immediately, and without hesitation, calls rang out demanding stricter gun laws, more restrictions, and so-called “common sense” legislation. But once again, the gun control narrative misses the mark by ignoring the real issues underlying these tragedies.
The Facts Don’t Support More Gun Control
In the aftermath of the CDC shooting, headlines like “CDC Shooting Sparks Renewed Demands for Stronger Gun Laws” were splashed across every media outlet. Emotional pleas from gun control advocates and families rang through the air: “We don’t want another family to go through this.” While heartfelt, these reactions often ignore facts and push for legislation that only burdens law-abiding gun owners.
Let’s be clear—the suspect in the CDC attack, 24-year-old Deion Patterson, reportedly used a firearm he already had access to despite prior history suggesting unstable behavior. No additional background check law or magazine limitation would have stopped him from walking into that facility. He didn’t follow laws—or respect life. That’s a criminal mindset we must confront, not penalize responsible gun owners because of it.
Failures in the System, Not Firearms
This tragic case illustrates a bigger failure in our mental health and justice systems, not a failure of the Second Amendment. Patterson’s mother stated outright that her son was suffering from mental health issues and had sought help, but did not get the treatment he needed. Once again, government agencies and medical institutions buckled under their own bureaucracy, allowing a sick individual to fall through the cracks until crisis hit.
- Patterson was discharged from the Coast Guard for “bad conduct”.
- He sought psychiatric assistance but was denied Ativan—an anti-anxiety medication—earlier that day.
- Numerous warning signs were present, but no actions were taken to intervene.
Yet what is the response from the left and anti-gun lobbies? Not an overhaul of the broken mental health system. Not enhanced support for veterans who return home with trauma. No, it’s more gun control—a flawed path that only affects law-abiding citizens and does absolutely nothing to deter actual criminals.
Fortress Firearms Training Teaches Responsibility, Not Violence
Here at Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we see up close what responsible gun ownership looks like every day. Our mission is simple: provide expert firearms training in a safe, supportive environment where law-abiding citizens can exercise their Second Amendment rights and protect themselves and their loved ones.
The problem isn’t the gun itself—it’s the person behind it. Firearms are tools, and like all tools, they require responsible handling and education. That’s why at Fortress Firearms Training, we offer courses that emphasize:
- Safe firearm handling and situational awareness
- Comprehensive concealed carry permit classes
- Home defense and tactical response training
- Firearm safety education for families and first-time gun owners
Instead of more laws that don’t deter criminals, we believe in empowering everyday people with the skills they need to be confident and competent gun owners.
Legislation That Puts Americans at Risk
Whenever tragedy strikes, politicians leap at the opportunity to push new legislation that chips away at our constitutional freedoms. The CDC shooting was no exception. Within hours, calls were renewed for federal “red flag” laws, universal background checks, and bans on so-called “assault weapons.” But let’s examine that:
- Most mass shooters, including Patterson, often pass background checks because their issues aren’t reported properly.
- “Red flag” laws have dangerously low standards of evidence and are ripe for abuse, potentially stripping citizens of their rights without due process.
- Assault weapon bans are based on cosmetic features, not functionality, and have repeatedly been shown to have no measurable effect on crime.
It’s a tired political playbook where government control expands, and individual liberty is further restrained—all while crime continues to fester. If laws truly stopped bad actors, cities like Chicago and Detroit would be paradises of peace. Instead, they are sadly some of the most violent in the country despite having the strictest gun control measures.
The Importance of Pro-2A Training Centers Like Ours
Fortress Firearms Training stands strongly with the Second Amendment. We understand that the right to bear arms is not just about hunting—it’s about liberty, self-defense, and ensuring that Americans are not dependent on government entities to protect them. In today’s uncertain world, that right is more critical than ever.
Rather than stripping away rights, we urge fellow Americans, particularly in South Carolina and the greater Fountain Inn area, to invest in proper training. Education, skill building, and law-abiding ownership is the solution—not knee-jerk policies triggered by media-fueled fear.
Community, Not Control
The attack at the CDC was horrifying, yes, but using such tragedies to promote ineffective gun laws is political opportunism at its worst. Let’s hold the right people accountable—the failures of the mental health system, not the millions of gun owners across this great country who exercise their constitutional rights daily with responsibility and care.
Instead of passing new laws, we should ensure that the laws we already have are enforced, our systems are strengthened, and that we promote access to resources for those who struggle with mental health concerns before disaster strikes. Blaming guns is lazy, irresponsible, and dangerous.
