Understanding the Truth Behind Colorado’s Gun Law Changes
Since the tragic events of the 2012 Aurora Theater shooting, Colorado has become a testing ground for new and often excessive gun control measures. While these laws are touted by their supporters as solutions to curbing gun violence, the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans continue to bear the brunt of these politically motivated changes. Is Colorado any safer now, more than a decade after these restrictions were put into place? The answer remains unclear, especially when viewed through the lens of hard data and constitutional freedom.
Gun Control’s Reactionary Nature
Legislation rushed in the wake of tragedy often does more harm than good. After 2012, Colorado’s focus shifted dramatically toward a raft of anti-gun laws, many of which were pushed without fully considering how they would affect responsible firearm owners. Following national headlines, politicians in Denver acted swiftly—many argue recklessly—to pass sweeping gun control bills.
Among the most controversial changes was the enforcement of universal background checks, a ban on magazines that hold more than 15 rounds, and the implementation of “Red Flag” laws. Over the following years, enforcement increased, but meanwhile, violent crime and shootings in cities like Denver and Aurora have not decreased consistently.
Red Flag Laws: A Slippery Slope
The broad adoption of Colorado’s Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), known as “Red Flag” laws, raises considerable constitutional concerns. Initially passed in 2019 and expanded since, this rule empowers courts to order the temporary removal of firearms from someone deemed a danger to themselves or others—often without due process.
We’ve already begun seeing cases where the law is misused, from reports filed by disgruntled family members to political motivations altering decisions. Rather than targeting truly dangerous individuals, these laws often penalize gun owners for exercising their Second Amendment rights. It’s no coincidence that these laws gain traction in places where anti-gun sentiment is most prominent.
Opt-Out Resistance and Local Pushback
Despite the state’s direction, not all of Colorado is going along quietly. Counties across the state have taken a stand, declaring themselves “Second Amendment Sanctuaries.” These counties have recognized that the state’s gun control laws are an affront to the Constitution and refuse to enforce several of the more restrictive policies.
These local governments are doing what Washington refuses to: standing up for the rights of their citizens. In fact, Colorado county sheriffs have repeatedly stated their refusal to enforce ERPOs, citing concerns over due process and constitutional violations. That sort of patriotic resolve is something we at Fortress Firearms Training deeply support.
Magazine Restrictions: Criminalizing the Law-Abiding
One of the earliest and most debated policies enacted in Colorado was the restriction on magazines greater than 15 rounds. The intent was framed as limiting the potential for mass shootings, but in reality, it only affected law-abiding citizens.
- Criminals do not abide by magazine limits—only responsible gun owners do.
- The law has created confusion and fear among citizens legally carrying for self-defense.
- Enforcement is inconsistent, and there’s little evidence the law has reduced gun violence.
Instead of punishing crime, these restrictions punishing constitutional adherence disrupt the lives of gun owners across Colorado. Let’s not forget—those intent on causing harm will not obey magazine laws in the first place.
The Fallout: Have These Laws Actually Worked?
The media and progressive lawmakers are quick to celebrate the introduction of stricter gun control laws, but honest analysis reveals weak results. The goal, purportedly, was to prevent another Aurora. Yet, Colorado has continued to experience firearm-related crimes and mass shootings even after implementing these laws.
The question becomes: Are these laws about public safety, or are they about political control?
Public safety is undoubtedly a priority, but one must ask whether undermining the rights of law-abiding citizens is an acceptable trade-off. We say no. At Fortress Firearms Training, we believe that education, training, and responsible gun ownership are far more effective tools than bureaucratic overreach.
Your Right to Train, Defend, and Protect
While Colorado attempts to ratchet down your rights, it’s more important than ever to ensure you’re properly trained and informed. At Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we offer comprehensive firearms training built on the foundation of the Second Amendment. We proudly support:
- Safe and responsible handgun training for all skill levels
- Concealed carry permit courses aligned with state and federal guidelines
- Real-world self-defense scenarios to improve decision-making and capability
- Firearms safety, storage, and maintenance basics
Rather than punishing responsible citizens, our approach empowers them. Education—not legislation—is the true path to increased safety and reduced accidental shootings.
The Road Forward for Patriot Gun Owners
As we look back at Colorado’s approach since the Aurora theater tragedy, it’s clear that intentions don’t always match outcomes. Good policy must consider both public safety and constitutional alignment. When lawmakers fixate on banning tools rather than understanding the roots of violence, they fundamentally fail their constituents.
Gun owners must continue to fight against over-regulation and for the rights that define our democracy. We urge everyone—especially responsible firearms users—to stay informed, stay trained, and be prepared to speak up against unjust laws.
