Carrying a concealed firearm is a serious step toward personal safety, but it’s not as simple as tucking a gun in your waistband. At Fortress Firearms Training, we’ve seen students fix these common mistakes fast—and trust me, they’re worth avoiding. Here’s what could trip you up and how to stay ahead.
Printing Gives You Away
Ever notice a bulge under someone’s shirt that screams “gun”? That’s printing, and it’s a dead giveaway. A tight tee or a cheap holster is usually the culprit. I’ve seen students switch to loose flannel or a quality kydex holster and vanish into the crowd. Test your setup—move, bend, sit. If it shows, fix it.
Skimping on Holsters
A flimsy holster isn’t just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous. I’ve watched a gun slip out mid-drill because someone cheaped out. Invest in something solid, molded to your firearm, with good retention. It’ll stay put and keep your trigger guarded. Our concealed carry class shows you what works.
Ignoring the Law
Laws aren’t suggestions, and they vary wildly by state. Carrying across state lines without checking reciprocity? That’s a felony waiting to happen. I’ve had students shocked to learn their permit didn’t travel. Study up—know your carry zones and no-go spots. We cover the legal basics in training so you don’t guess.
Fidgeting in Public
Touching your gun to “check” it screams inexperience. I’ve seen folks adjust their holster in line at the store—heads turn fast. Keep your hands off unless it’s go-time. Practice drawing at home until it’s second nature. Confidence hides better than paranoia.
Skipping Practice
A concealed gun you can’t shoot is dead weight. Range time isn’t optional—drawing from concealment is trickier than it looks. One student told me, “I thought I’d figure it out if I had to.” Nope. Our drills teach you to clear your shirt, aim, and fire without fumbling.
Stay Sharp, Stay Safe
Concealed carry done right is invisible and effective. Avoid these pitfalls—dress smart, gear up, know the law, act natural, and train hard. Our next CWP/Beginners course is April 12—perfect for mastering concealed carry from scratch. Sign up at Fortress Firearms Training and don’t let a mistake cost you.
