The Reality Behind Gun Control Myths

It’s a narrative we continue to hear: more gun laws will keep us safer. But when you examine recent headlines—particularly the disturbing case where a South Carolina woman with a violent history murdered her boyfriend despite existing laws—you begin to look at the debate through a new lens. This tragic incident is yet another brutal example that gun control fails again when it comes to preventing violent crime.

What Really Happened?

Just outside of Rock Hill, SC, Carlee Morton was sentenced this week for the 2021 murder of her boyfriend. Her defense initially claimed self-defense, a narrative that crumbled as the jury learned chilling details of her past statements, including threats to “gut” her ex “like a deer.” Shockingly, she shot the victim in the back and left him to die.

Here we have a woman with a proven pattern of violent behavior, yet somehow, existing laws did nothing to stop her from obtaining and using a firearm to kill someone. This case makes it clear—rather than blaming the tool used, our focus should be on educating and empowering individuals to defend themselves and recognize real threats when they see them.

The Broken Logic Behind Gun Control

The mainstream media and opportunistic politicians will always rush to use these stories to push for more gun legislation. But let’s stop and ask ourselves: would one more law have saved that young man’s life? The reality is, no.

Gun control fails again when it comes to crimes of passion, mental instability, or domestic violence. Criminals don’t follow laws—they exploit weaknesses. And more regulations only harm law-abiding citizens who want to defend themselves and their families.

Consider These Realities:

  • Morton had a record of domestic violence, yet there was no intervention to restrict her access to a firearm based on her prior threats or behavior.
  • The victim was unarmed, unable to defend himself from an ambush attack in his own home.
  • Gun control laws didn’t prevent the homicide—they simply failed to act on warning signs already in the system.

When Seconds Count, the Police Are Minutes Away

It’s heartbreaking, but this situation is common. Calls for tighter gun laws ring hollow when we see time and again that these laws don’t apply to those intent on doing harm. Gun control fails again by assuming that disarming the public will somehow stop violence. It won’t. What it actually does is create more victims.

The answer isn’t more legislation—it’s more training, more responsibility, and more preparedness. At Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we offer the kind of hands-on defensive firearm education that empowers good people to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Our Constitution gives us the right to bear arms—and it’s not just a right, it’s a responsibility. When the state fails to protect us, we must be prepared to do it ourselves.

The Legal System’s Flawed Approach

During the course of the trial, Morton’s own messages and recorded threats painted a damning portrait. Her alleged victim was sleeping when the attack occurred. The system had ample opportunity to intervene far before this murder. But once again, it didn’t. And no amount of laws would have compensated for the failure to act on documented signs of aggressive, unstable behavior.

Predictably, this case hasn’t been used to spark outrage over the lack of firearm education or encourage people to get trained in personal defense. Instead, the usual crowd demands more laws that would do nothing to stop someone like Morton and a lot to hamper the freedom of everyday Americans.

Here’s What We Should Be Talking About Instead:

  • Why did nobody intervene sooner despite her aggressive threats?
  • What can individuals do to recognize and report patterns of dangerous behavior?
  • Why aren’t more citizens encouraged to get trained in concealed carry and self-defense tactics?

We’re asking the wrong questions as a society, and every time a tragic story like this breaks, it reminds us that the laws already on the books are failing—not for lack of complexity, but because laws don’t stop criminals. Prepared people do.

The Power of Preparedness

At Fortress Firearms Training, we believe everyone deserves the ability to protect themselves. That’s why we offer comprehensive firearms safety courses, concealed carry training, and situational response tactics designed for real-world application.

We don’t just teach people how to shoot—we teach them when and why. We train responsible individuals who understand that security doesn’t come from politicians. It comes from within.

In a world where gun control fails again and again, responsibility and readiness are the only logical answers. Don’t rely on broken systems or empty promises. Invest in your safety, and in your liberties.

Stand for the Second Amendment—Because It Stands for You

The Founders of our nation understood that rights must be protected by more than hopes and prayers. They wrote the Second Amendment because they knew an armed and educated populace is a free populace. We must not forget it. And we must never surrender our rights based on emotional reactions and skewed narratives pushed by those who simply don’t understand firearms or freedom.

This tragic story should be a wake-up call: not to disarm good people, but to empower them with education and practical defense skills. At Fortress Firearms Training, we believe in protecting what matters—your family, your rights, and your life.
