Protecting Our Constitutional Rights: A Dangerous Slippery Slope
At Fortress Firearms Training, based in Fountain Inn, South Carolina, we proudly stand for the inalienable rights granted by the Second Amendment. We believe in a well-informed, armed, and responsible citizenry. But lately, even some of our most trusted political allies seem to be considering ideas that threaten to chip away at those rights—and we cannot afford to ignore it.
Recently, concerns arose among gun rights advocates about a potential firearms restriction targeting transgender individuals. According to a Fox News article, the possibility of a federal firearms ban on certain Americans—based solely on mental health concerns linked to gender identity—has sparked serious backlash, especially among patriotic Second Amendment supporters. The shooting community is raising a collective eyebrow at the idea that a future Trump administration might entertain any form of identity-based prohibition, and here’s why you should be paying attention.
When Gun Control Masquerades as ‘Common Sense’
Let’s be clear: under current law, individuals can be prohibited from purchasing or owning firearms if they’ve been adjudicated as mentally defective or involuntarily committed. But broadening that definition to create a blanket ban for people simply because of gender identity sets a dangerous precedent.
Our Constitution does not allow the government to preemptively strip rights based on hypotheticals or sweeping generalizations. If we allow such precedent to be set—even on a group we may not fully understand or agree with—we open the floodgates to more expansive and draconian gun control efforts in the future.
This is how freedom erodes—one “reasonable” exception at a time.
NRA and Second Amendment Advocates Speak Out
The National Rifle Association (NRA) made its position perfectly clear. In a recent statement to Fox News Digital, the NRA responded to the ban discussions by stating:
“Due process matters. The NRA has always stood for protecting the rights of law-abiding Americans—regardless of their background or identity. We oppose any effort to take away rights without due process, and we call on lawmakers to focus on crime, not criminalizing identity.”
This is exactly the type of strong, principled stance we need from our nation’s largest gun lobby. At Fortress Firearms Training, we echo those sentiments. You cannot cherry-pick constitutional rights for political expediency.
Political Pandering vs Constitutional Integrity
Some policymakers might see targeting controversial sub-groups as an easy political win. But our job as gun owners—especially those of us who train responsibly and stay up to date on firearm laws—is to resist those attempts and call them out for what they are: a soft launch of further gun restrictions down the road.
Constitutional rights do not shift based on public opinion polls, social movements, or cultural disagreements. The right to keep and bear arms is not granted or revoked by party politics or identity categories. It is God-given, constitutionally protected, and non-negotiable.
Slippery Slope: Who’s Next?
Once a precedent is set to deny one demographic the right to own firearms, what stops further bans on:
- Veterans with PTSD?
- Senior citizens with early dementia?
- People taking prescription medication for anxiety or depression?
- Anyone labeled as ‘extreme’ by a future administration?
If conservatives support any form of identity-based bans today, we hand future, more progressive administrations the legal tools to restrict firearm ownership entirely. If we truly believe that the Second Amendment is a safeguard against tyranny, then introducing exceptions rooted in profiling or political convenience defeats the very purpose of that safeguard.
Defending the Second Amendment Starts Locally
Here in South Carolina, Fortress Firearms Training has always focused on education, readiness, and responsible gun ownership. But just as important is our responsibility to defend our rights when they come under threat—from the Left or the Right.
We must hold every politician accountable — even the ones we vote for. Whether it’s the Biden administration or a future Trump White House, our rights are not bargaining chips. If we allow that line to blur, we will regret it down the road.
That’s why we encourage our students and fellow citizens to get involved in robust firearms training, stay aware of legislative changes, and challenge any effort to dilute the power of the Second Amendment, no matter how palatably it’s packaged.
Train Smarter. Stand Stronger.
At Fortress Firearms Training, we don’t just teach people how to shoot—we train citizens to be defenders of liberty. Our courses in the Fountain Inn area include:
- Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) training – Stay protected and compliant with South Carolina laws
- Beginner and Advanced Firearms Handling Courses – Learn safe, accurate skills for all experience levels
- Self-Defense and Home Protection Training – Be prepared when it matters most
We don’t believe in relying on emotion-driven legislation or social engineering to guarantee public safety. We believe in armed, trained, and constitutionally protected Americans as the cornerstone of a free society.
Final Thoughts: Freedom Is Non-Negotiable
No community should be targeted unfairly when it comes to civil liberties. Either you’re mentally unfit to own a firearm based on due process, or you’re not. We cannot allow identity politics—whether from the far Left or a misguided Right—to dictate who qualifies for constitutional protections.
If we claim to support the Second Amendment, it must be consistent, principled, and inclusive of all Americans who legally qualify. That is the conservative approach, and that is the American way.
Join us at Fortress Firearms Training to get the education, resources, and constitutional clarity that every responsible gun owner needs now more than ever.
Your rights are only secure if you defend them. Don’t wait for Washington to do it for you.
