Shooting accurately isn’t just about pulling the trigger—it’s about mastering the fundamentals. Whether you’re a new gun owner or looking to refine your skills, improving your accuracy takes practice, patience, and proper technique. If you’re struggling with shot placement or consistency, these key tips will help you sharpen your aim and boost your confidence at the range.
1. Perfect Your Grip
A proper grip is essential for accuracy and control. A weak or incorrect grip can cause excessive recoil, poor shot placement, and slow follow-up shots.
How to Fix It:
• Grip the firearm firmly but not too tightly—think of a strong handshake.
• Your dominant hand should be high on the backstrap, with fingers wrapped securely around the grip.
• Your support hand should apply forward pressure while wrapping around the dominant hand.
• Keep both thumbs pointing forward along the frame for better control.
2. Focus on Trigger Control
Jerking or slapping the trigger is one of the biggest reasons for missed shots. Smooth, controlled trigger manipulation is key to accuracy.
How to Fix It:
• Place the pad of your index finger (not the joint) on the trigger.
• Apply steady, even pressure to the trigger instead of pulling it quickly.
• Use a slow, deliberate squeeze and let the shot surprise you.
• Avoid “anticipating” recoil—stay relaxed and let the gun fire naturally.
3. Align Your Sights Properly
Misaligned sights will send your shots off target. Whether using iron sights or optics, sight alignment and sight picture are crucial.
How to Fix It:
• The top of the front sight should be level with the rear sight.
• The front sight should be centered between the rear sight notches.
• Keep your focus on the front sight, not the target.
• If using a red dot, place the dot over the target and maintain a steady hold.
4. Maintain a Proper Stance
Your stance affects stability, control, and recoil management. A poor stance leads to inconsistent shots and slower follow-ups.
How to Fix It:
• Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart for balance.
• Lean slightly forward with your weight on the balls of your feet.
• Keep your knees slightly bent to absorb recoil.
• Avoid leaning backward or locking your arms too stiffly.
5. Control Your Breathing
Uncontrolled breathing can cause unnecessary movement, affecting accuracy. Proper breath control helps keep your shots steady.
How to Fix It:
• Take a deep breath and exhale partially before pulling the trigger.
• Hold your breath briefly during the shot to minimize movement.
• Avoid rushing your shots—focus on a controlled breathing rhythm.
6. Dry Fire Practice at Home
Improving accuracy doesn’t always require live ammunition. Dry fire practice is an excellent way to build muscle memory and refine technique.
How to Fix It:
• Use an unloaded firearm and confirm it’s clear before practicing.
• Focus on trigger control, sight alignment, and grip stability.
• Practice against a target at home to reinforce good habits.
7. Train Consistently and Seek Professional Instruction
Accuracy improves with consistent practice and proper training. Regular range visits and expert guidance will help you progress faster.
How to Fix It:
• Develop a routine practice schedule to reinforce skills.
• Work on one technique at a time rather than trying to fix everything at once.
• Take a professional training course to correct bad habits and receive expert feedback.
