Time to Dismantle Failed “Gun-Free Zones” in Our Schools
For too long, a dangerous myth has persisted in America: that labeling an area as a “gun-free zone” somehow makes it safer. In reality, these zones do the exact opposite. They create soft targets — predictable, vulnerable, and unprotected. The Idaho Second Amendment Alliance (ISAA) has now boldly stepped forward to challenge this flawed idea by pushing legislation to end federal “gun-free school zones” in their state. As defenders of the Second Amendment and as firearms instructors at Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we stand with them.
Gun-Free Zones: A Failed Experiment
Gun-free school zones were born from federal law — well-intentioned, perhaps, but rooted in fantasy rather than fact. These zones are magnets for criminals, not deterrents. It’s no coincidence that nearly every modern mass shooting has taken place in a so-called gun-free zone. When killers know no one around them is armed, they face no resistance.
According to the ISAA and Second Amendment advocates nationwide, these laws strip law-abiding Americans — notably trained and licensed concealed carry holders — of their right to protect themselves and others, especially our children.
Idaho Leading the Way
In their latest effort, Idaho activists are rallying public support and legislative momentum to ban these zones at the state level, even if that means pushing back against federal overreach. As ISAA President Greg Pruett stated, “We need to end the practice of disarming law-abiding gun owners simply because they are near a school.” We couldn’t agree more. Here in South Carolina — and across the nation — we should be standing alongside Idaho in this fight.
The 2nd Amendment Is Not a Suggestion
The Founding Fathers didn’t draft the Second Amendment so it could be gutted at random by federal or state mandates. They intended it to be a shield — a guarantee of the individual right to self-defense, and a check against tyranny. Every time a gun control law passes, it chips away at our rights and leaves more innocent Americans vulnerable.
Banning firearms in specific zones does not stop criminals — it only disarms the good guys. The average response time of law enforcement nationwide is around 7 to 10 minutes. You don’t need to be a tactical expert to understand what kind of chaos and tragedy can unfold in that time.
Empowering Citizens Through Firearms Training
At Fortress Firearms Training, we believe the answer is more education, more training, and more responsible firearm ownership — not more restrictions. Americans should be empowered to take control of their personal safety, including in and around schools. That starts with recognizing that a well-trained, licensed concealed carry holder is part of the solution, not the problem.
The Benefits of Responsible Firearms Training
- Confidence in High-Stress Situations: Training helps individuals stay calm and act decisively, potentially stopping threats before law enforcement arrives.
- Safe Handling: Education ensures less risk of negligent discharge or improper use.
- Understanding the Law: At Fortress Firearms Training, we teach not just shooting fundamentals, but the legal implications of using deadly force.
- Improved Awareness: Trained individuals develop situational awareness that can prevent threats before they escalate.
Our classes serve all skill levels — from beginners to experienced gun owners. We equip people with the competence and knowledge to act responsibly and effectively, inside or outside the home.
Don’t Wait for Politicians to Protect You
The recent push in Idaho shines a light on a larger truth: waiting for Washington to get it right is a losing strategy. It is up to each state — and each individual — to reclaim their God-given right to self-defense. And it’s up to communities to stop outsourcing their safety to vague promises and political grandstanding.
Too often, gun control laws are pushed by those who don’t understand firearms, ignore constitutional rights, and focus only on feel-good policies that fail in real-world applications. The result? Tragedy after tragedy in “gun-free zones.”
We Must Demand:
- Repeal of Gun-Free Zone Laws: Schools should be protected by more than just a sign.
- Support for Trained Armed Staff: Teachers and administrators with proper training should have the option to carry.
- Investment in Security and Firearms Education: Real safety comes from informed and prepared citizens.
The Time to Act Is Now
Whether you’re in Idaho, South Carolina, or anywhere else in the country, the message is clear: we must fight back against the lie that disarming the good guys makes anyone safer. We believe in personal freedom, the right to self-defense, and protecting the lives of our students and communities.
If you’re in the Fountain Inn area and are looking to become part of the solution, join us at Fortress Firearms Training. Get trained, get confident, and defend your rights. Gun-free zones don’t keep bad guys out — they just keep the good guys defenseless.
Let’s follow Idaho’s lead and demand that unconstitutional restrictions be repealed, and that our schools, children, and communities be protected by responsible, trained citizens, not ineffective “gun-free” labels.
