Examining the Real Issues Behind Gun Violence in Urban Centers

Gun control advocates are at it again. Following the recent Manhattan shooting, the media and left-leaning politicians have wasted no time calling for sweeping reforms to national gun laws. In reality, this tragedy reveals more about the failure to enforce existing laws than it does about the need for new restrictions. At Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we believe in equipping responsible citizens with the knowledge and skills they need to protect themselves and their communities. The answer isn’t to restrict law-abiding citizens—it’s to empower them.

The Manhattan Shooting: A Tragic Result of Failed Enforcement

The incident that occurred in New York City’s Flatiron District resulted in two deaths, including the suspected shooter. But rather than focus on how this individual obtained the firearm despite all of New York’s strict regulations, anti-gun activists are pushing for stricter national laws. This knee-jerk reaction ignores the fact that New York already has some of the toughest gun laws in the country—clearly, that didn’t stop the attack.

  • Background checks are already mandated in New York.
  • Magazine capacity is limited.
  • Concealed carry permits are heavily regulated.
  • Firearm ownership requires extensive paperwork and fees.

And yet, criminals still find ways to obtain guns while law-abiding citizens are left defenseless. More legislation won’t fix the clear breakdown in criminal justice and enforcement; it simply strips more rights from responsible gun owners.

Gun-Free Zones Make Us Less Safe

New York’s obsession with “gun-free zones” has only contributed to a culture of vulnerability. Criminals don’t follow laws—they prey on soft targets. When ordinary civilians are stripped of their right to carry for self-defense, the only people left with guns are the criminals and the overburdened police whose hands are tied in many jurisdictions. Would the Manhattan shooting have unfolded differently if law-abiding citizens had been armed and trained to respond?

At Fortress Firearms Training, we see firsthand how training transforms individuals. Our students don’t just learn how to shoot; they understand safety, situational awareness, and legal responsibility. Empowered citizens are the greatest deterrent to crime, not the mere presence of new legislation.

The Left’s Misguided Crusade Against Firearms

Following the tragedy in Manhattan, Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat launched into a familiar anti-Second Amendment tirade, calling the shooting an example of rising national gun violence. Espaillat wants to push federal legislation that would impose even tighter restrictions, despite overwhelming evidence that criminals ignore laws. Rather than blame lawbreakers, anti-gun politicians blame the very liberties that protect American citizens.

Consider this: if gun laws actually reduced crime, cities like Chicago, Baltimore, and New York would be safe havens. Instead, these urban centers, saturated with anti-gun policies, consistently rank among the most dangerous places in the country. Something doesn’t add up.

What the Data Really Says

It’s critical to take a step back and actually look at the statistics. According to multiple reports, the majority of firearms used in crimes are illegally obtained, often through straw purchases or the black market. These are already crimes under federal law. Adding more rules won’t change anything—it will only entrap law-abiding gun owners in a confusing web of bureaucracy.

  • A Department of Justice study found that only 10% of guns used in crimes were purchased at retail outlets.
  • Most offenders obtain firearms through friends, illegal dealers, or theft.
  • Only a fraction of criminals undergo background checks at all.

This data underscores the truth: our problem isn’t a lack of regulation—it’s a lack of enforcement and a refusal to face the deeper social issues behind crime.

Why Firearms Training Is Part of the Solution

If we really want to reduce gun violence and increase public safety, we need more armed, trained citizens, not fewer. At Fortress Firearms Training, our mission is rooted in the belief that knowledge and responsibility go hand-in-hand with firearm ownership. Our concealed carry classes, defensive shooting scenarios, and home protection courses give South Carolinians the real-world tools they need to act decisively under pressure.

Firearms training:

  • Reduces negligent discharges and accidental injuries
  • Promotes responsible ownership and situational awareness
  • Prevents crime through deterrence
  • Builds confidence and community resilience

Defensive gun use happens far more often than mainstream media will admit. The CDC has acknowledged that guns are used defensively anywhere from 500,000 to 3 million times per year. How many lives are saved by simply being trained and prepared?

What Needs to Change

Instead of blaming guns or the Second Amendment, it’s time to take a hard look at what’s really driving violence in our communities:

  • Soft-on-crime policies that release repeat offenders
  • Dysfunctional family structures and educational gaps
  • A lack of mental health support and/or early intervention
  • Failure to prosecute gun crimes already on the books

It’s easier for politicians to point fingers at firearms than fix systemic issues. But guns themselves are not the problem—people are. A firearm is a tool, no different than a car or a knife. In trained, responsible hands, it can save lives and stop violence. In the wrong hands, it becomes a tragedy waiting to happen. We need to keep guns in the right hands and stop criminalizing those who follow the law.

Standing Firm for the Second Amendment

The Manhattan shooting should remind us of the dangers of living in a society where only criminals are armed. Fortress Firearms Training stands strong with American gun owners and the principles of freedom, responsibility, and preparedness. As we’ve seen time and again, more gun control does not mean more safety. In fact, it leaves everyday citizens helpless and reliant on government systems that have repeatedly failed them.

Instead of pushing for more legislation, let’s focus on

  • Empowering citizens through education and training
  • Fixing the enforcement failures of existing laws
  • Supporting policies that crack down on actual criminals rather than penalizing lawful gun owners

If you’re serious about personal protection, start with the right foundation. Fortress Firearms Training is proud to serve the Fountain Inn community and surrounding areas with top-tier firearms instruction rooted in constitutional rights and practical skills. Our rights are worth defending, and training is the first step toward true preparedness.
