Understanding the Impact of New Gun Laws on Law-Abiding Citizens

As of October 1, Michigan residents are facing a fresh wave of gun control measures. These new laws, passed earlier in the year and now going into effect, reflect a concerning trend: lawmakers and local leaders pushing heavily politicized posturing instead of prioritizing the rights and security of law-abiding citizens. While these laws are marketed as “common sense” and “public safety” measures, in reality, they introduce significant burdens on responsible gun owners—without addressing the root causes of gun violence.

What the New Gun Laws Actually Do

The new legislation includes several components that disproportionately affect responsible gun owners. Michigan’s policy shift includes:

  • A new background check requirement for all firearm purchases, including private party transfers.
  • A secure storage mandate requiring gun owners to lock up firearms in homes with minors present, regardless of actual risk or oversight.
  • Red flag laws, which allow courts to temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals deemed a threat—often based on vague or subjective evidence.

While the stated goal is to reduce firearm-related incidents—particularly among children and those suspected of posing a danger—there’s little concrete evidence that such laws substantially improve public safety. In fact, these laws may increase the legal risk for average, law-abiding citizens, many of whom have responsibly owned firearms for decades.

The Pro-2nd Amendment Perspective: Liberty vs. Legislative Overreach

When local leaders in Michigan claim these laws are about “keeping us safe,” it’s worth asking: safe from whom? Criminals, by definition, do not follow laws. They will not undergo background checks. They will not purchase safes to lock their firearms. And they certainly won’t comply with red flag laws. This is where the burden squarely falls on the shoulders of the law-abiding gun owner.

At Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we train citizens in responsible firearm use, emphasizing safety, situational awareness, and preparedness. Our clients take their responsibilities seriously—and government overreach does nothing to support their safety. Instead, these types of laws serve primarily as roadblocks to self-defense and constitutional liberties.

Gun Control Is Not the Same as Crime Control

It’s essential to separate gun control from actual crime prevention. The two are not interchangeable. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), defensive gun use often goes unpublicized—yet estimates range from 500,000 to 3 million incidents per year in which law-abiding citizens use firearms to protect themselves, their families, or their property.

The unfortunate consequence of Michigan’s new laws is that they begin to criminalize self-reliance. For example, under the new secure storage mandate, a responsible gun owner who acts quickly in a break-in situation to protect their family could be penalized for having kept a loaded firearm accessible.

That doesn’t prevent crime. It punishes vigilance.

The Red Flag Quandary

Red flag legislation is another area of concern—paraded as a solution for stopping mass shootings and suicides, but riddled with constitutional red flags of its own. These laws allow family members, law enforcement, or even former partners to petition courts to confiscate an individual’s firearms—without that person having committed a crime and often without due process.

Critics point out that red flag laws violate the Second, Fourth, and Fifth Amendments by:

  • Denying citizens their right to bear arms without due process.
  • Encouraging anonymous accusations that can lead to gun confiscation before a person even knows they’ve been reported.
  • Creating a framework for abuse, especially in domestic disputes or divorce cases.

Imagine being a responsible gun owner—perhaps a veteran, a retired police officer, or even a dedicated hunter—and suddenly facing the confiscation of your firearms because of an unverified claim. It’s not just hypothetical anymore in Michigan. It’s the law.

The Right to Protect Is the Right to Life

Let’s not forget what the Second Amendment was designed to uphold: the right of the people to keep and bear Arms for defense of self, community, and nation. This perpetual erosion of our rights, under the guise of safety, serves no one but those who wish to consolidate power and disarm dissent.

Instead of passing laws that punish good people, why not empower communities through proper education and training? At Fortress Firearms Training, we offer comprehensive training programs for new and experienced shooters alike—including concealed carry certification, situational defense courses, and firearms safety education.

We believe in educating individuals to carry responsibly, not restricting them into defenselessness.

Training Trumps Regulation

If Michigan legislators genuinely wanted to reduce gun accidents, they would focus on promoting firearms education rather than restrictions. Many gun incidents could be avoided if gun ownership came with appropriate guidance, which is precisely what institutions like ours offer:

  • Intro to Handguns and Rifles
  • Concealed Carry Permit Classes
  • Home and Personal Defense Training
  • Active Shooter Response Courses

Fortress Firearms Training is proud to give responsible Americans the skills and knowledge to be their own first responders. We stand firmly against legislation that punishes preparedness and undermines the Constitution.

Final Thoughts

Michigan’s gun laws, though well-intentioned on the surface, highlight a disturbing trend of prioritizing control over liberty. The new laws do not deter criminals. They do, however, frustrate and restrict the ability of good citizens to defend themselves. This failure to differentiate between criminal misuse and responsible ownership is unacceptable in a free society.

It’s time to push back. It’s time to stand up for our constitutional rights and invest in real safety through education, not legislation.
