Second Amendment Rights Under Siege: What Michigan’s New Gun Legislation Means for Law-Abiding Gun Owners

The recent push by the Michigan Senate to advance new gun control legislation—targeting bump stocks and so-called “ghost guns”—serves as yet another reminder that the fight for our Second Amendment freedom is far from over. As the Michigan Senate moves forward on bump stock, ghost gun laws, law-abiding gun owners need to take stock of the disturbing trend toward excessive government overreach and the criminalization of basic firearm rights. Gun legislation framed as “safety measures” threatens to bury responsible, trained citizens under red tape, all while doing little to deter actual crime.

Understanding the Proposed Legislation

At the heart of these proposals are two key firebrand policies:

  • A ban on bump stocks, devices that alter the firing mechanism of a semi-automatic weapon to mimic automatic fire
  • The mandatory serialization and regulation of privately made firearms, widely referred to as “ghost guns”

Senate Bills 857 and 858 were passed on party lines by the state’s Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, reflecting a troubling pattern of anti-gun ideology outweighing legitimate discussion and bipartisan concern. Democrats, under the pretense of “public safety,” are pushing for a sweeping restriction of firearm accessories and privately produced weapons without offering any concrete evidence that these laws will reduce crime.

The Myth vs. The Reality

It’s important to recognize how legislation like this is sold to the public. Politicians invoke high-profile tragedies, like the 2017 Las Vegas shooting that involved a bump stock, to justify sweeping bans. But does this legislative approach target the real problem, or is it just political theater?

The truth is:

  • Most criminals don’t use bump stocks or ghost guns; they obtain firearms through illegal means or stolen sources.
  • Privately made firearms have legitimate uses—like gunsmithing education, sporting applications, and family heirloom creation—especially among trained, responsible gun owners.
  • Mandatory registration and serialization opens the door for future confiscation, placing legal ownership one step closer to government oversight.

This legislation will not deter those with criminal intent. Instead, it penalizes lawful gun owners who follow the rules, invest in proper training, and exercise their Second Amendment rights with integrity. Serious gun crime reduction starts with addressing prosecutor accountability, policing, and cultural attitudes—not attacking devices and law-abiding citizens.

A Direct Threat to Skilled Gun Owners

As Michigan Senate moves forward on bump stock, ghost gun laws, one of the most frustrating elements is the blatant disregard for gun owners who invest time and money into proper firearms education and training. Here at Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we work tirelessly with individuals who want to be safe, proficient, and lawful gun owners. Drawing broad brushes that vilify tools and personal gun-building projects under the label of ghost guns ignores the high level of skill, care, and legality involved in these projects.

Most people engaging in home gunsmithing are:

  • Firearms enthusiasts with a deep respect for safety
  • Veterans or former law enforcement officers who enjoy building and maintaining their own equipment
  • Citizens exercising their Constitutionally protected right to bear arms without undue government interference

Creating a firearm at home is legal under federal law as long as it’s not for resale. But under new Michigan proposals, these same builders would now be forced to submit their creations to a government registry, defeating the foundational idea of privacy and ownership this country was built on.

Unenforceable & Ineffective Policy

The lawmakers supporting this legislation claim that serialization and banning bump stocks will help law enforcement trace firearms used in crimes. But the reality is starkly different.

Most “ghost guns” recovered by law enforcement are found in areas already drowning in criminal activity and governed by local policies that de-prioritize prosecution and police support. You don’t reduce crime by making it harder for citizens to protect themselves; you reduce crime by holding criminals accountable and bolstering community policing.

States that implement heavy restrictions on gun ownership inevitably see unlawful gun possession continue. Why? Because criminals don’t follow laws to begin with. Yet, power-hungry politicians continue to script these laws aimed at disarming the people who are least likely to commit a crime.

Training & Responsible Ownership Are the Answer

If lawmakers truly wanted to enhance safety, they would funnel energy and funding into firearms training and community education. At Fortress Firearms Training, we firmly believe that the safest communities are the ones where gun ownership is coupled with knowledge, skill, and respect for the law.

Our training programs emphasize:

  • Safe firearm handling and storage
  • Self-defense strategies and legal rights
  • Realistic scenario-based training

Education is a far more effective deterrent to misuse than legislation. When citizens understand how to properly use and maintain their firearms, communities become safer—not more dangerous.

Call to Action: Don’t Let Freedom Fade

As the Michigan Senate moves forward on bump stock, ghost gun laws, gun owners nationwide need to pay attention. What starts in Michigan could soon be echoed in other states, especially those leaning toward restrictive governance. These measures are dangerous not because of what they do to criminals—but because of what they do to the freedom of everyday Americans.

We at Fortress Firearms Training urge our community—and all gun owners across the country—to stand up, stay informed, and remain vigilant. Our freedoms are not given; they are earned and defended. And that means saying no to irrational, ineffective legislation that limits lawful gun ownership.

Now is the time to advocate for gun education, not legislation. To support gun rights, not surrender them. And to remind lawmakers that we are not subjects—we are citizens. Armed, trained, and free.
