Gun Control Politics Once Again Erode the Rights of Law-Abiding Citizens

In the wake of a tragic incident at an Islamic school in Minneapolis, activists and Democratic lawmakers recently held a rally at the Minnesota Capitol to push for sweeping new restrictions on firearms ownership. As expected, officers of the Left leveraged a moment of community vulnerability to renew calls for an “assault weapons” ban, despite no concrete evidence that such laws have ever made America safer. From our vantage point here at Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, we see this familiar rhetoric aiming to punish responsible gun owners while doing nothing to solve the root causes of violence.

The Latest Push in a Long Campaign Against the Second Amendment

This latest rally, predictably timed after the shooting at the Al-Amal School, follows the same tired script used throughout decades of gun control theater: tragic event, emotional outcries, and renewed calls for government overreach. Lawmakers ignored one critical detail—what happened in Minneapolis had nothing to do with lawful gun ownership.

Yet, activists lined up to support bills such as HF 131, which seeks to limit citizens’ access to so-called “assault weapons.” Governor Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison offered sound bites masquerading as solutions, declaring that communities do not need “weapons of war” on city streets. This narrative—driven more by politics than fact—serves one purpose: to erode the Second Amendment under the veil of public safety.

What Are “Assault Weapons,” Really?

The term “assault weapon” is notoriously ambiguous and emotionally charged. In many proposed laws, including those discussed during the Minneapolis rally, the phrase serves more to frighten than inform. What is typically targeted in these bans? Popular, semi-automatic rifles like the AR-15—one of the most commonly owned firearms in America, often used for:

  • Home defense
  • Sport shooting competitions
  • Hunting
  • Firearms training

These rifles function no differently than many common handguns. Yet, because they look “tactical,” uninformed lawmakers and agenda-driven groups treat them as inherently dangerous. Put simply, cosmetic features—like pistol grips or adjustable stocks—do not make a firearm more lethal.

The Real Issues Go Ignored

One of the most glaring problems with these emotionally charged rallies is how they divert attention from the actual causes of violence. In the media frenzy following the Al-Amal school shooting, little has been said about:

  • Gang-related violence
  • Lack of mental health infrastructure
  • Broken urban criminal justice systems

Instead, the focus is shifted to disarming law-abiding Americans. Liberties are threatened, and the media rewards politicians with favorable headlines for “taking action,” even if their measures are ineffective and unenforceable. This political theater ignores communities like ours in South Carolina, where responsible firearms training is viewed not as a threat—but as a necessary safeguard for both families and freedom.

Firearms Training: The Responsible Path Forward

At Fortress Firearms Training, we know that the answer to rising crime isn’t more regulations. It’s better education and preparation. Responsible gun ownership comes with the understanding of how, when, and why firearms should be used. Our programs focus on:

  • Safe firearms handling and storage
  • Defensive shooting and tactical training
  • Constitution education and 2A rights

When we train individuals—from homemakers to retirees to law enforcement recruits—we empower citizens to take control of their safety. We preach accountability, not fear. And we strongly believe that an armed populace is a free populace.

Why South Carolina Stands Firm as Minnesota Falters

Unlike Minnesota’s political class, the great state of South Carolina acknowledges the value of armed, trained citizens. Here, we reject the false equivalence of gun control and public safety. Our laws continue to respect the constitutional rights handed down by our Founding Fathers. We know that disarming responsible Americans will never stop criminals who, by definition, already ignore the law.

The authoritarian playbook is clear: fabricate a moral panic, justify government expansion, and strip away freedoms in the name of safety. We’ve seen it in New York, California, and now Minnesota. As history reminds us, any nation willing to exchange liberty for security ends up with neither.

Join the Fight to Protect Our Rights

We stand at a crossroads: kneel to the drumbeat of centralized control or rise with the strength of individual liberty. At Fortress Firearms Training, we’re proud to stand with those who choose the latter. We urge citizens everywhere—not just in South Carolina—to challenge misguided regulations and double down on what works: responsible firearms training, education, and an informed electorate.

A well-prepared citizen does more for community safety than any piece of legislation rushed through in the aftermath of tragedy. Let’s refocus the conversation on what actually matters—empowerment, accountability, and the preservation of freedom.
