Firearm Safety and Responsibility: A Southern Perspective on NY’s Misguided Attempts

Recent legislation out of New York has sparked renewed debates about gun rights and governmental overreach. Under the pretense of safety, lawmakers in Albany have rolled out laws demanding locked firearm storage—even inside one’s own home—claiming they are addressing an apparent “crisis” in accidental shootings among children.

While any avoidable tragedy is heartbreaking, Fortress Firearms Training in Fountain Inn, SC, believes knee-jerk legislation that strips citizens of their Second Amendment rights is not the solution. Instead, education, training, and personal accountability are the real keys to firearm safety.

What’s Happening in New York?

This summer, New York state expanded its 2021 “Safe Storage Law” to apply broadly, mandating anyone with a firearm and someone under 18 in the home—not just children under 16—must securely store their guns at all times. In a similar move, they extended the rules to apply to households where “unauthorized people” could access the gun.

While New York touts this as a solution to a spike in accidental injuries, we need to question the real motives and long-term results of such legislation. These mandates might play well on liberal news networks, but they often undermine responsible gun ownership and infringe on constitutional rights.

The Real Problem: Lack of Training, Not Legal Gun Owners

Statistics can be dangerous when taken out of context. The New York report suggests a 44% increase in unintentional gun injuries to children under 17. But what isn’t being said is:

  • Most of these incidents involve stolen or unlawfully obtained firearms
  • There’s little evidence these injuries involve law-abiding, trained gun owners
  • New York already had one of the strictest safe-storage laws in the country, so why isn’t it working?

At Fortress Firearms Training, we teach that responsibility is rooted in knowledge. Our certified instructors emphasize both technical proficiency and situational awareness. It’s not enough to own a firearm—you must know how to safely store, handle, and use it. That doesn’t require a mandate from Albany. It requires an owning culture of responsibility, something many in the pro-2A community have embodied for decades.

The Dangers of Overreaching Legislation

New York’s new extension of the safe storage law is a classic example of reactionary policymaking that confuses forced compliance with genuine safety. Here’s why these types of laws are problematic:

  • They criminalize gun ownership by setting traps for otherwise responsible citizens who may misinterpret regulations.
  • They reduce a family’s ability to protect themselves, especially in rural areas where police response times may be extended.
  • They assume government knows better than the individual homeowner about what works in their household.

These policies ignore basic constitutional principles. The Second Amendment wasn’t written to enable hunting—it was written to empower self-defense and resist tyranny. When the state forces gun owners to jump through increasingly complex loopholes to access their own tools of defense, the intent of the Second Amendment has clearly been lost—or worse, ignored.

Training is the Answer—Not More Laws

Instead of burdening citizens with more red tape, we should be investing in firearms education. At Fortress Firearms Training, our mission goes beyond the range. We cultivate a mindset of protection, responsibility, and constitutional respect.

Our courses in Fountain Inn are tailored for new and experienced firearm users. We provide:

  • Basic Handgun and Rifle Training for all skill levels
  • Family Firearms Safety Courses designed to involve teens and kids
  • Responsible Concealed Carry Education with practical situational drills

Instead of locking firearms away where they become useless in a crisis, we teach proper usage and discuss secure access solutions like biometric safes and rapid-access designs that keep weapons both safe and accessible.

South Carolina Doesn’t Need New York-Style Control

At Fortress Firearms Training, we believe in the power of the individual—not top-down mandates from bureaucrats detached from the real world. Unlike New York’s urban-centered elitism, South Carolina values independence, especially when it comes to protecting our homes and families.

Let’s not forget, when seconds count, police are often minutes away. Local and national data support that a lawfully armed citizen is often the first and last line of defense in an emergency. Restricting access to firearms, even under the guise of “safe storage,” may actually make households more vulnerable—not safer.

Empowerment Comes Through Knowledge

While the New York legislation may come from a place of good intentions, it lacks a deep understanding of America’s gun culture. Education is powerful. When responsible gun ownership and safe firearm storage are taught—not mandated—they become second nature. And when people are trained properly, we prevent accidents the right way.

There’s no substitute for hands-on instruction, whether you’re new to shooting or preparing to get your concealed weapons permit. That’s why we provide a full service approach at Fortress Firearms Training—not just checking boxes, but building confidence and competence.

Final Thoughts

Firearm safety is absolutely crucial—there’s no question about it. But that safety doesn’t come from blanket laws or fear-based legislation. It comes from a community of knowledgeable gun owners who take their responsibilities seriously.

As New York veers further into restrictive territory, South Carolinians must hold the line. We can protect our children without relinquishing our rights. Education, not legislation, will always be the superior path forward.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your skills, investing in firearms training is the best way to ensure safety and responsibility.

Don’t wait for lawmakers to tell you how to keep your home secure—learn how to do it right with Fortress Firearms Training.
